AMEX PLATINUM 5X AIRFARE UPDATE

Just spoke to an AMEX rep who said changes to Platinum card effective Oct 6th will include:
5x points on airfare booked directly with the airline, with Platinum travel services, or on their travel website. Thought I would share. Smiley Happy

I hope that is not the only upgrade to their card. Yes 5x is good but other categories need an upgrade to. Dining, hotel points (especially from the looks of the SPG merger they probably won't have that portfolio after the merger?)

Looks like perhaps Amex is responding to the Sapphire Reserve don't you think? I would like to justify both but MR are not as valuable to me so for the time being I'm thinking to drop the platinum and prg in lieu of CSR once i can get it.

Nothing official on their website. I'd take OP's comment with a grain of salt.

rumors floating around mutiples forums/blogs/etc..  Chances are this is one of the many changes happening very soon.   They need to compete with the CSR/Prestige and the likes better than they have been and this is a start.

I feel like Amex is going to need to do more than just that to counter the Reserve/Prestige. Another big problem they have is acceptance, not everyone takes Amex.
