It is confusing and I appreciate the clarification.  So clear as mud to me now.

No problem. It's getting clearer but still not that clear yet for me. I need to go test it today or tomorrow with Apple Pay and see what happens. Hopefully my physical Curve card will be here next week.

Is it a hard pull to open?

Nothing so far. It sure sounded like it was going to be a hard pull.

Re: Curve Card - Still in Beta...accepting applications via invite

I am very skeptical and nervous about this Curve card.

The US reddit page agent said:

We do a soft credit check to determine applicant eligibility, and a hard check only if the applicant accepts the terms.

There is also language that suggest the card will be reported to the credit bureas. It IS a credit card after all. Personally, I just don't want this account if it's going to turn into an account that reports to the bureaus, nor do I want to be a guinea pig who gets a hard pull from it.  Considering that they are giving people $500 toy limits, I'll be darned if I take a pull and a new account over it, vs what i can get from Chase and Amex.

The limit is not $500 - it's whatever the limit is on the cards you link to Curve.

The $500 is like a "backup" credit line that Curve only uses if your linked card gets declined for some reason (they call it an "anti-embarrassment feature")

I know the limit is not $500 since it's pass through.  The problem is that you are taking a hard pull and a new credit account on your report which is not adding anything to your overall available credit other than $500.  I know other people might be okay with that, but I'm not sure that I am.

This reminds me of Paypal Key with the added advantage that you can change the funding card after the fact.

I think it has potential (especially if it codes as MasterCard debit) but I'm not getting too excited until the dust settles and the various bugs get worked out.  There's also questions around the $500 credit line they offer... I almost wish that wasn't even a part of it.

That said, I did join the waitlist.  I guess I'm a glutton for punishment, ha. Smiley Embarassed

I especially agree about the $500 credit line. I have no interest in that "credit line" at all. If my card is declined for some reason, I will use another card or respond to the fraud alert. I used my Curve card through Apple Pay for the first time a couple of days ago at a grocery store. The transaction went straight through to my Aeroplan card. It shows up as "CRV*Safeway ..." which is nice since I can still tell where the transaction happened and it is identical to a normal safeway transaction that would show as "Safeway ..." with the store number except that "CRV*" is at the beginning. I'm still waiting for the trasaction to settle on my Aeroplan card to find out if I received the 3X points as I should for grocery stores. I will report back when it settles.

As the article above about the Curve Card pointed out, there is no "gas" category for the smart rules which seems rather foolish. I'm thinking about using my wife's new Freedom Flex which has the 5% on gas for 12 months on up to $6,000 as the "default" Curve card for gas and then using the smart rules for groceries and dining on my Aeroplan card and whatever other rules apply properly. If the Curve Card continues to work correctly, I may just leave my Mastercards at home and switch the "default" card as needed for gas and office supplies.

If you use a gas station mobile app to unlock the pump, that's an easy way to make sure gas purchases only go on 1 card. You can just add that card to the app.

Re: Curve Card - Still in Beta...accepting applications via invite

I also signed up for the waitlist and will likely apply .. I remember hearing about this card in the UK while poking around the UK credit space (online) and kinda was hoping it would come here.. Over there there was also a currency conversion component to it as well.. (cough better than being hit by paypal for their courtesy currency conversion) Wonder if that comes as well.. the 500 buffer actually makes sense .. in general it reminds me of Transmedia/iDine and Tally had a child (along with Paypal Key h/t @UncleB ) Actually am looking forward to apping for this product..
