Re: Help understanding AMEX

If you wanted to get your signup bonus in a hurry, you should not have changed your payment due date until after you had received the bonus.  With Amex, as with most card issuers, changing a due date causes your next statement to arrive 2-3 weeks later as their system adjusts to the new due date.

Daily Carry: PenFed Power Cash • NFCU Flagship • NFCU More Rewards • Chase Freedom
Sock Drawer: PenFed Promise • NFCU cashRewards • Chase Sapphire Preferred • Chase Freedom Unlimited • United Explorer • UNFCU Azure

From my understanding, if it is your first MR earning card, then the sign-up bonus points will take the extra month to post.  However, on subsequent MR earning cards with sign-up bonuses, they will post immediately.

That's what happened to me.  PRG first (had to wait a month), then immediate posting of bonuses with ED and Blue for Business (and BB+ soon!).

I understood about the wait. But I earned the bonus in June, the first week I got the card. July statement has come and gone. Second statement should be August 7th which is when I was expecting to receive them. Thats what I was trying to confirm with the CSR when they told me I wouldn't get a statement until September 1st. That's not even the date I requested for the change.

I've only ever changed a due date with Chase and that is not the case with them at all. If I call them on the 14th and ask to change it to the 16th they do it right away. It has never delayed my statements with them. If AMEX is different so be it but I think the whole thing is a bit ridiculous. I earned the bonus in June. I should receive it in a timely manner.

MR points from regular 1x/2x/3x spend categories do take an extra month to post, but the signup bonus usually posts within days of meeting minimum spend...even in the middle of a statement period.

It depends on the card. I met my PRG spend bonus in the first month, but didn't get the bonus points until after the second statement cut, along with the rest of my points from regular spend.

However, on my ED and BCE, I got the bonus / statement credit as soon as the transactions posted.

To both of you, I'll point out that my first Amex was a PRG and I didn't have to wait for the bonus.

Weird stuff happens, but don't look for rock-solid rules to explain it.

Personal spend: Amex Gold, Amex Schwab Plat., BofA PR+CCR(x2), Costco
Business use: Amex Bus. Plat., BBP, Lowes Amex AU, CFU AU
Perks: Delta Plat., United Explorer, IHG49, Hyatt, "Old SPG"
Mostly SD: Freedom Flex, Freedom, Arrival
Upgrade/Downgrade games: ED, BCE
SUB chasing: AA Platinum Select

Maybe since the two of us experienced the same behavior, and you didn't, your case is the anomaly.
