PSA: Capital One BJ's Bumpy Start

My Comenity BJ's card always closed on the 2nd, so I logged in at midnight just to see if the first statement closed with CapOne last night.  To my utter shock and surprise, a $29 late fee was showing on my account.  CapOne has rolling statement close dates, so my new statement has not yet closed.

My BJ's card is always paid in full (except for a 2% with no fee BT offer I had back in 2017), with payment always scheduled within a day or two of statement close for before the due date.  My card had a $0 balance with a pending charge when I activated it on Monday, which was the first day one could do so for these accounts.  Fearing this may be a system-wide glitch with the account transfers and that if it is phones might be really busy today, I called last night.

My due date was the 27th and my payment of the full statement balance posted on the 23rd prior to the transfer to CapOne.  They were looking at my account and first stated that it appeared I had paid one January charge of $3xx.xx but not another January charge for $1xx.xx.  I'm like but you can clearly see that my payment was $4xx.xx which matches my statement balance, is exactly equal to those two charges, and posted 4 days prior to the due date.  Next up, they told me it was because I hadn't paid the pending charge in time.  I'm like, it posted Monday night on my due date after I activated the card with a $0 balance, and my account clearly showing $0 due.  You can't expect me to pay charges before they even post without assessing a late fee, that charge will be on my next statement.

After about 25 minutes on the phone, finally they agreed with me that this was clearly an error, I had a $0 balance when they acquired the account Monday, and I currently owe $0 as recent charges will appear on my statement closing in the next few days.  I was assured that my late fee would be credited in 3-4 days, extensive notes had been added to the account that this was clearly an error, that it would not be considered during account reviews, and that they would be forwarding the matter to their "superiors" for further review to find out why this happened.

I did check my credit reports to make sure that they didn't report a 30+ day late or worse, and everything seems okay.  Even though I have not had a CapOne statement close yet, the cards no longer report as Comenity but simply as Capital One (no store designation, so just like their core cards) and they all reflect my February payment made last week.

Fingers crossed nothing more comes of this, but thought I would just post a PSA to those who had their accounts converted to double-check their accounts to make sure that CapOne has applied their Comenity payments correctly.

-_-  That's not good! Errr now I have check this as soon as I get home!

I did the same thing as you did by paying the balance before it was transferred over just in case, but still bought somethings at BJs over the weekend. It was showing 0 balance on Tuesday!

Now I have to watch for auto pay to go through later this month too probably. 😠

@CYBERSAM While I was wrong about the rewards to statement credit that was on the original pre-release website, payment info I am sure on!  LOL They did stress that auto payments and payment accounts would not be transferred and that no payments would be processed the 24th-26th during the transition.  So autopay would definitely need to be set up again (they actually prompted me to do so multiple times when I activated) as would payment accounts.

Here's the visual for this since my post was wordy.  It clearly shows amount of the last statement, date and amount of payment, and most importantly "no payment due."  Smiley Frustrated  Thankfully all payment transactions and all statements since February 2022 did get carried over to them, so the agent I spoke with last night was able to see all of that.

Sounds like they really messed things up for you, the fact that it took 25 minutes on the phone for them to figure out it was their error and their fault isn't exactly giving out "positive vibes". Good grief.

@K-in-Boston This type of stories is what makes me do a quick check on my accounts everyday, smh, one little error can cost a lot. I'm glad the issue was solved, I would have probably felt I was in the wrong.
have a nice weekend.

It definitely was a glitch in their system. I freaked out too and spoke to someone who told me I didn't make the minimum payment. They were wrong and reversed the fee. Then I called back today to make sure they didn't report a late payment to the bureaus and they told me a lot of accounts were affected and they were aware of the issue.

@MamaGrizzly11 thanks so much for your post.  I suppose there is at least some comfort in numbers, and it's less of a mystery when others were affected too.

A "past due fee waiver" of -$29.00 was applied to my account on Saturday the 4th.  The wording of that still annoys me, though.  It's as if they waived it as a courtesy.

Right, shouldn't it be "past due fee reversal" or something to that effect?

I check my accounts once or twice a week and seeing your post prompted me to check my BJs One Account. Sure enough there was the same $29 'PAST DUE FEE' you experienced on my account transactions dated March 2nd. I called in and they stated that they were aware of the issue and that a reversal had already been processed. I asked for clarification as to how it will be listed, and she stated that it will show on my monthly statement as 'Late Fee Reversal' and not 'Late Fee Waiver'.
