I'd call the Fraud Team and ask what exactly does this ^^^ mean and when all this happened and with what acct. in the past? Were you ever an AU on ANYONE else's acct. at one time or another with Synchrony?

@DenverFoxI totally agree with @GApeachy I would not let this go. Someone verbally needs to address this issue for your sake and all of ours.
Someone at this institution needs to do a manual in depth review to ascertain the actual specific catalyst for the negative actions received and not some generic blanket reasons.
I understand that embedded in all those terms and agreements we agree to state these companies can do whatever whenever but most of us natually seek some type of logic to explain things so we can have some type of acceptable understanding.
I would keep pressing and use whatever tools are available to reach that point. It could simply be a glitch somewhere in the AI that is creating the mess and labeling you with false accusations and ridiculous reasons that have no credibilty.
I started my credit journey to a better score not long ago as stated in previous posts with the knowledge once I reach a certain point and doing things certain ways I could benefit greatly in so many ways. Looking at people with much better scores and decent overall profiles going through unnecessary crap is slightly disheartening.

Very well said and I agree wholeheartedly ! I believe this is exactly what happened. Whoever designed the code to sweep/close perceived risk accounts did not do a good job at all. I also think because of the way it was done, it's too difficult to go back in and correct each mistake made. Or, btw, have to explain what caused it. Guess those in charge decided it would be best to simply lose a limited number of good customers in the sweep, who already have or can get credit elsewhere, than open pandora's box. Just thinking out loud.
Thank you guys for pushing me to continue to get to the bottom of this. I've spent the last few hours digging, making phone calls and I think I may have found something.
Based on the decline which indicated I have a past or current delinquincy with Synchrony, I followed this flow
- Called the Fraud department, they said they had no mechanism to explain why a credit decision was made. I explained I needed them to tell me what Synchrony account shows the delinquency. They transferred me to customer service.
- When I spoke to the rep, they were working from canned scripts, couldn't tell me anything.
- I tried the online chat. They were working from canned responses
- Called customer service again, this time for the Care Credit card. This person was kind enough to look up all of my accounts by my social. They reviewed some but did not have access to all. They passed me around in transfers to other departments where they did the same.
- I finally reached someone who rattled off a few other accounts.. Walmart, ToysRUs and JC Penny.
I recognized the old Walmart and ToysRUs cards, closed them out about 6 years ago. What I did NOT recognize what the JC Penny card.
I called the number they gave me for JC Penny and when I entered my social, it immediately transferred me to a collection department. I tried to inquire about the account and explained the situation. They said they needed to verify two pieces of information but since there was no birthdate on file, no phone number, and my addresses didn't match they could not provide me any additional information.
I had them transfer me back to the fraud department and I gave them everything detail I had and opened an investigation. Looks like I was the victim here at some point of identity theft! I am interested to see how quickly they can resolve and I will keep everyone posted. It's not on my credit report, never has been. So seems like someone opened an account in my name, burned the card off and left it to default. They would not tell me how much or when, but they said I should receive a letter with the investigation results in the next 10 days.
This looks to be the culprit with my situation. I wish they had looked at the other 4 accounts, gotten a contact number and called me since my history with them shows I don't treat my accounts this way
So... After a week of telling myself to never deal with Synchrony, I wanted to annoy them by accepting an offer for a Rakuten credit card. I had 14 amount with Synchrony with limits close to 130k, with all accounts being PIF except PayPal credit which was @ 0%. I applied and was instantly approved for the Signature version with a starting limit of 1k (don't know what the actual limit will be). They hit both TransUnion and Experian for the inquiry. I have no major purchases coming up so I feel like reapplying for the Sam's card again as it was the most valuable card I had with them...

That is surprising Synchrony caps out at 100K and I haven't heard of anybody going above their max?
Yeah... For a while I was capped at 98k... But one random day, I used the love button and my limits got raised and thought they may have changed their threshold for some reason... These were my limits before they shut me out:
Amazon Store - 10k
JCPenney - 7.5k
Chevron - 2k
76 Gas - 2k (balance of $150 @ the time of closure, and always paid in full)
Care Credit - 17k
Lowe's - 20k
Paypal Mastercard - 10k
Paypal Credit - 10k ($1,000 @ closure - this will hurt since I always used it to defer payments on big purchases)
Paypal 2% - 10k
Car Care - 10k
Marvel - 10k
Sam's Club Store - 10k
Sam's Mastercard - 20k (balance $1200 @ closure, always paid in full - angry since they owe me like $300 in rewards)
Cathay Airlines - 6k

I had a feeling it was a Possible Fraud scenario. You need to pull your "Factor Trust" report...Google it. Synchrony uses "Factor Trust" and I found out last year that I was a victim of Identity Theft through "Factor Trust". Also pull all your other reports as well. Go to the Equifax breech and check to see if you were affected. I was. But the ppl that stole my $%@# tried unsuccessfully to open an installment loan. That's why I know Synch uses "Factor Trust" because they were all over my report hp's and sp's.
So I'm glad you dug in and pushed with Synch...this could have ended up more widespread than you anticipated (or not) but getting this legally documented will help you; not hurt.
Please update.....and be patient while they search. Do your Lexis Nexis, Factor Trust and other searches too, maybe do a police report if/when you find something. Thanks for updating!
@DenverFox
And besides what I just posted ^^^and knowing you're busy now with this and probably tired BUT (when you feel like it), you should post a Fraud thread with a link to this thread for ppl to follow, and be sure to reference back to this "Synchrony Account Closure" thread. You're the first to have dug in, forced Synch to investigate and found out that a random, multiple closure by Synch "could" ACTUALLY be due to Fraud.

I don’t know whether it’s good or bad but I don’t know if the results are reliable because the other thread I read, every time he did it, there was a wild swing.
I am probably the person you are referring to from the other thread. My determination was that the "unenroll/enroll" trick wasn't reliable for VS4 even though it was reliable for FICO. After Synch switched and provided DP for a few months, their once a month pull seems reliable and closely matches VS3 from other sources. I've since stopped doing the trick, and after reading this thread for the first time today... WON'T BE DOING IT AGAIN!!!!
It looks like we may be uncovering a different possibility of the closures with the recent fraud discovery, but I'll throw in some info below about the VS4 scoring in case this happens to be a factor as well. Perhaps Synch is seeing something funny with this new system and reacting to what they see, but I would imagine they would first evaluate and compare results using this system before pulling the AA trigger like they have recently.
My DW Synch account is the one I was testing, as we did a PFD on a medical collection recently along with paying down some holiday spend on a 0% intro CC. Those items gave us the uptick on the VS3 chart (courtesy of CK). That wild upswing on the Synch VS4 chart is the manual trick. Other times (some daily), I would see wild 20 point swings up and down. I doubt the 778 VS4 score is accurate and will most likely drop significantly later this month when Synch publishes their monthly score.
I don't have a current TU FICO score for my wife as a comparison now that Synch switched to VS4. I do have current TU FICO scores for my account though, and it has been rock steady @ 740 for many months no matter what I do with UTI. CK's VS3 and Synch's VS4 are pretty similar and react similarly.
