Hi All,
Couple of quick facts
Long time lurker (8+ years), first time poster.
I've been working on my credit over the last 2 years and gone through some big improvements.
Currently Credit Karma shows me @ 786 Transunion, Equifax @ 715 and Experian @ 705. I also check these scores from IdentityIQ, Chase Journey and they are similar.
I currently have two cards that are mine (Chase Freedom $0/$3800 and Capital One Platinum $0/1750)
and I'm an AU on two others (two Chase cards $1,118/29,200 and $0/$14,700)
With that, I've been reading threads about which company pulls from which CRA. My dream card I've always wanted to apply to is the Amex Blue but I'm worried that I'll get denied (since my Experian is the lowest) and because I didn't get a pre-approval when I went through their portal. I'm unsure if this is because they're not using my live score (which has jumped up a ton in the past few weeks) or because despite having low utilization (3%), high income, no inquiries for a year and no missed payments since 2018, I do however have student loans (7k) in collections.
With my recent score bumps, I would like to take advantage of it and begin applying for multiple credit cards. I did a couple of pre-approvals that pull from TU like the Apple Card and got pre-approved for 4k. I assume I would also get approved for others who pull from TU. Below are my questions
1) Should I just hold off until my Experian is higher then 705 for Amex Blue?
2) I recently did use the Experian boost which netted me around 40 points. If Amex does check my credit for pre-approval, or a full application, would this actually be useless and I'm just applying at a 775?
3) My score has jumped a ton in the past two weeks, is there a chance that I'm not getting pre-approval offers from AMEX because they aren't using a live score?
4) If I wanted to take advantage of my TU score (786) and get multiple cards at once, should I just apply for multiple cards in the same day?
5) I'm looking at trading my car in for a lease (with a lower payment) since my APR is high. Should I do that before or after I apply for cards that pull TU?
EDIT: Found a thread discussing that AMEX has two different pre-approval pages. Upon trying the other option, it says I am pre-qualified for the Hilton Honors American Express Surpass card. I'm not too interesed in this card personally but I feel like this has to be a decent sign. Is this card easier to get then the AMEX Blue?
First thing to do is get your FICO scores, and if you're focus right now is AMEX you in particularl want your Experian FICO 8 score.
Vantage 3.0 and FICO 8 scores track poorly with each other and can be more than 100 points off from each other (can confirm this personally) so you really want to know where you stand in the same context as that of the card issuers.
My Experian FICO Score 8 is 705. I get this from logging into experian.com and getting it from them, I assume this is the one you're referring to?
OK. You also mentioned Credit Karma which only provides Vantage 3.0 scores. There are ways of getting both score types from Experian, but in the fine print it will tell you exactly the score type.
As a general rule of thumb an Experian FICO 8 score of 705 can get you approved with AMEX although most likely not at the best APR rates. You can still get an approval even if you aren't preapproved, but that also depends on the specific reason(s) why you have a 705 score.
Also, different issuers have different criteria for approval. Just because you got a preapproval for an Apple card based upon a soft pull from Transunion (which emperically is pretty universally solid) doesn't mean that you will get a preapproval or an approval from a different issuer that also pulls from Transunion.
Lastly while one has to be mindful of what cards one is likely to be approved for, there is also an element of only acquiring cards that you can actually leverage. I'd think twice about getting the Apple card strictly because you can get it.
Not sure if you saw my reply but I did actually find a thread on here from last year that mentioned there are two AMEX Pre-qual links. Upon trying to the second one, I actually got pre-qualified for the HIlton Honors Surpass card. I assume this has to be a good sign. I am unsure how this card compares to the AMEX Blue in terms of qualifying though.
And totally get what you're saying about the Apple card. I do think I would get approvals for most that pull TU because I have 0 lates, 100% payment history and my student loans (which are still in dispute with Experian and Equifax) were removed from TU. My TU credit doesn't have a single negative thing to it at the moment.

That would depend on whether or not the issuer also soft-pulled one of the other CRAs. While that wouldn't show up as an additional inquiry they will see the same information that they would see if they did a hard pull.
It is kind of unusual to only get a preapproval for 1 card but while the Surpass has an AF whereas the Blue does not it's typically a bit easier to get a co-branded card. As I mentioned previously the reasons behind the score being what is is are important to an underwriter, but on the surface an EX FICO 8 of 705 tends to be good enough for an approval.
Gotcha so I'm going to just pull the trigger and apply for that today. Will wait until I can hopefully get some replies to my other questions as well. Also thank you so much for the reply and insight.

As said above, 705 is high enough for approval on an Amex core revolver, but cc issuers approve profiles, not scores, so it would depend on the details of your EX report, your income, etc. However, see my next answer to your question about Experian Boost.
Also, is the "Amex Blue" that you're interested in Blue by American Express or a different card? If the former, does a 1x MR earning revolver have more value for you than one of their cashback cards?
2) I recently did use the Experian boost which netted me around 40 points. If Amex does check my credit for pre-approval, or a full application, would this actually be useless and I'm just applying at a 775?
To my knowledge, Amex does not use boosted scores. (I don't know of any lender that does.) If 705 is your boosted score and 665 is your EX8 w/o boost, I would probably hold off as the mid 600's is low for an Amex core revolver approval.
3) My score has jumped a ton in the past two weeks, is there a chance that I'm not getting pre-approval offers from AMEX because they aren't using a live score?
I'm not sure how Amex does the SPs for pre-apps if you're not already a cardholder, but I think a good rule of thumb for SP-related credit stuff is to give it a month or two after positive changes report if you want to be sure. Regardless, the actual application will use an HP that pulls your current report and score.
4) If I wanted to take advantage of my TU score (786) and get multiple cards at once, should I just apply for multiple cards in the same day?
How you will want to space out multiple apps will depend on the strength of you profile, what lenders you are apping with, and how you want to manage meeting any SUBs. You can look at what lenders are partial to pulling TU here. As said above, that a lender tends to only HP TU doesn't mean that they necessarily will in your case or that they will not look at the other bureaus, but it can still give you an idea of where you want to target your apps. What are you looking for in cards to add to your profile, other than being from issuers that pull TU?
5) I'm looking at trading my car in for a lease (with a lower payment) since my APR is high. Should I do that before or after I apply for cards that pull TU?
If it were me, I would probably do the car lease first, since terms on an auto loan would have more of a financial effect on me than terms on a credit card. But whether and how much cc apps prior to an auto app would affect terms would probably depend on your overall profile and how much of a spree you went on.

The conventional wisdom is that Amex co-branded cards are easier to get than their core revolvers, but the lack of preapproval for a core revolver does not necessarily mean that you would be denied if you apped. From what you've said here, I'm not sure that you would be approved for a core revolver yet, but they had no preapprovals for me when I apped for my BCP and I was still approved. If the Blue card that you're looking at is one that you've been wanting and you're willing to spend the HP, you could still app and see what happens, tho you might only get a marginal $1k approval.

Let us know how it goes!
Got approved for 1k, super pumped!
