Much success, but perhaps not SO much

This is my very first post (that will probably be moved). I've been reading these forums for over two years now. I've learned a ton, but regardless of that have still made a plethora of bad decisions. I've had many approvals in the last 6 months as well as many denials while racking up the inquiries to boot. I am going to summarize my profile for you all. Not really seeking any particular advice at the moment,. I realize the best thing for me to do is garden and let my AAoA and limits grow at this point. I really just wanted to introduce myself as well as share my approvals with people who will understand best. When I try to convey this information to my family or co-workers they all think I'm crazy or credit obsessed. Although I probably am the latter, I realize this isn't such a bad thing. Most people I know grew up with the belief that credit=bad and that you shouldn't put anything on plastic. It took me 30 yrs (I'm 32) to find out how incorrect this is and that if handled responsibly, credit can be an essential key to wealth building. That is what I'm using it for anyway. Everyone in my family has terrible credit, couldn't finance a stick of gum if life depended on it. I'm # 7 out of 8 children and the only one with credit cards, financed vehicle, bank accounts and soon to be mortgage. Being one of the youngest, trying to convince my elder sibs that they can repair and rebuild their credit is like trying to convince a fish that air is just as good as water. I've stopped trying to bring them to the light and have focused my efforts on breaking the bad credit cycle with my children. Thanks for reading. I hope to participate more regularly and become part of this great community.

Re: Much success, but perhaps not SO much

Thanks!

I also failed to mention my student loans were rehabbed. The 3 closed loan accounts all report with dozens of 90 and 120 day lates on each from 3+ years ago.

My actual scores have only moved up or down a handful of points in the last 2 years. I imagine paying off my loans might help me see some real movement in the up direction. Also, no more apps/inquiries would probably help.

Re: Much success, but perhaps not SO much

You got 7 Amex approvals in the same day? Am I reading that right?

Re: Much success, but perhaps not SO much

Correct DJ. And I'm hoping they don't come across that fluke/glitch and shut me down. It was January 6. Once I realized what was happening I went on until they said stop. I read and re-read every Amex post on here to see if there was a precedent. I found none. Not sure why I was approved.

Can you explain why you decided why you would give yourself over $900 of AF's with Amex? Not only is there a lot of minimum spend there, there's a lot of overlap in rewards.

Re: Much success, but perhaps not SO much

Hi DeeBee, as far as the minimum spend goes I knew I'd meet them due to some upcoming travel/large purchases I needed to make anyway. So far, I'm only paying the AF for the platinum as all others were waived for the 1st year and that one will pay for itself very shortly. I'll have a year to decide which of the others work for me or if I'll keep them all. I honestly just didn't expect to get approved for ANY of them. The ED was the 1st I applied for basically expecting a denial. Like I said, due to some glitch or some backdoor left open I was able to get in and I must have been high off of AMEX approvals which is why I went on and applied for them all. In hindsight, the ED and Green will probably be the least useful for me.

In the end, I realize most people here are anti-AF and don't see the point in paying for one but if the card works for me and pays for itself then I'm ok with it.
