I've seen this topic a few times over the years but thought I'd provide recent information on my experiences.
I was successfully able to get off-cycle bureau updates from AMEX and Synchrony using two different methods. For AMEX, after paying the balance down to the $0, I called customer service and requested to speak with their Credit Bureau department. Once transferred, I explained that I am working on a mortgage pre-approval and this card's balance reflecting zero is a stipulation to the approval. The agent from the Credit Bureau department immediately responded that he'd push my update through to all 3 bureaus and I would see the new balance report in 3-4 days. Success!
Synchrony was just as easy. I paid my CareCredit balance down to $0 over the weekend, requested a CLI (approved), and updated my income -- some combination of those 3 activities triggered an update to all bureaus, which I was able to see this morning.

@AverageJoesCredit LOL this is what happens when I have too much time on my hands (thanks to work from home for two months)! Finally expanding my brand from "Congrats on your approval" to "storytime with 1985." Another two weeks and I'll be telling my life story to anyone willing to lend an ear!
Also, shoutout to #SharingisCaring and Grumpy Bears for Christmas haha!
Yeah, always remember those days I envy those who can work from home lol cuz when you have nothing to do at home it can be taxing .
On subject of Sync, getting them to off cycle report is hard. I know many a time when you know you are doing great by trying to make a payment so the purchase doesnt post , thats when they post the purchase on your statement. Frustrsting to say the least
Stay well my friend, we have a long road ahead. AJC
