As another poster suggest, file complaints with the necessary people.

Also, watch the news and it might be happening to several people in your area. or call and report it to your news. If enough ppl report, they'll do an investigative piece on it or they do here anyhow.

Just tonite, there was something on the news about these kind of scams.

With the new Stimilus checks going out, they are pretending to be the IRS and "need your personal information to send you your check". C'mon it's the IRS, they know more about you then you do.

OT- but if you work for SSA can you tell me why when I get my ChexSystems, TeleTrack, etc reports it says my SS became available in Missouri in 1982, when I've had the SS # since 1980 in MO.  All the reports have the same information, so they must be getting it from the same source.

I work for the Social Security Administration. If they have your name and last 4 digits of your SSN, they can identify who you are if they already have your SSN. The last 4 and your name would be unique to you, while there could be many people who have your name and the same first 3 digits of a SSN.

I get calls like this too saying that I owe a debt, but then they want to verify my SSN. So, that would mean that they don't know if I'm the right person. They are just fishing for information. I just tell them to send me a debt collection letter and hang up. I get enough of these calls that I'm thinking of getting a private home telephone number instead of this listed one. I wish these CAs would just pull my credit report. Then they would know I have no delinquent debts.

The number belongs to a collection agency Asset Acceptance. They mainly deal with Gym collections

It is important to distinguish between phishing, real collection attempts on a old
debt that is yours, and a simple mixup. A few years ago I had some fun when a CA
was looking for a deadbeat with a name similar to mine elsewhere in the same state
whose phone was unlisted in order to avoid creditors so when they searched they
got MY number. The local police in the deadbeat's town were not able to tell me
much due to privacy laws but acknowledged the guy was very well known to them.

I ended up putting a fraud alert on my CR's for a while and sending a letter CMRR
to the CA basically saying "I am not the person you seek, I have never lived within
30 miles of the address in your files, I can document the fact that I have lived
in my current zipcode continuously since 1992, and finally I have never done
business of any kind with the original creditor you name, I have spoken with the
local police where the person you seek lives, please go away..."

After a few more phone conversations they did go away, and none of this ever appeared
on my credit reports (I checked them pretty carefully for a while!).

Mine says it didn't become available til the year I started kindergarten... I think maybe it has something to do with when your parents actually ordered your card or something??? I know there wasn't as much of a rush to get those things done "back in the day" unlike today where they have you complete that info before you even leave the hospital...

Yep, my parents didn't bother getting me an SSN till I was about 12 years old, now
the SSN is required to get the tax deduction so the IRS can match numbers and detect
two returns claiming the same dependent. I recall reading the first year they did
that, thousands of divorced couples were suddenly forced to agree on who would get
to claim the kids as dependents.
