Yesterday a kind soul (nolamike) mentioned that veterans are now eligible for NFCU membership. I joined NLSD last summer so that I could join NFCU, but it was so much of a PITA to jump through the hoops that I never got around to applying for membership. (FWIW I ended up getting an insurance discount that more than made up for the cost of joinging Navy league.) So yesterday, I immediately applied for membership and a few minutes and another painful TU pull later I was a member. So i apped for the Flagship Rewards Visa Signature since I know that's the one that can go to $80k and it fits my long-term goal of significantly downsizing my portfolio to a handful of cards with very high CLs.
So, here's the timeline:
3:00 PM - App for card. Goes go 24 hour decision. See "Review In Process" for status on their website, get a handful of alerts that I have received another TU pull.
8:00 PM - Receive text message: "Your credit card application requires additional information. Please call Navy Federal at 1-888-842-6328"
8:05 PM - I call. I speak with a helpful CSR who tells me that due to "very high reported income" they need my most recent two stubs, if I have reported household income to also include my wife's two most recent stubs, and if I am self-employed to please send them a copy of my most recent tax filing. Since the closest branch to me that is not on a restricted military facility is over 5 hours away, she told me to use the secure message icon at the top of my account screen to send them those documents. Since it was late in the evening, I would probably not receive a decision until tomorrow (which is today).
8:30 PM - Submitted most recent stubs. Have checked status constantly since. LOL
Today 3:30 PM - See that I have a reply to my secure message.:
Navy Federal Response 04/01/2017 :
Thank you for providing the requested information. Your application is currently under review. If your application is approved, you will receive the new card within 5-7 business days. However, if your application is disapproved, please allow 7-10 business days to receive information regarding the Credit Card Lending Team's decision. If we can be of any further assistance, please let us know.
It's still sitting at "Review In Process." Anyone have experience with this? I am really looking forward to being a part of NFCU and going on a card-closing spree if the line is large enough to not send my util back over a certain threshold. Looking here and at the pulls database, I see so many people with significantly lower scores and baddies getting instant approval for $25k on NFCU cards.
TU FICO 08 was 733 a few days before they pulled this (I have to be the one to not get my slightly better EQ pulled?). Would have been 11 INQ (thanks to Chase and BOA for almost all of them). AAoA on TU is 8.9 years, oldest 23, newest CSP on January 1st as I have a few new ones not yet reporting - they would see about 8 new revolving accounts and 5 loans in 2 years. Util is 25% but probably 26/27% on yesterday's TU pull. No derogs on any CB report ever. Verified income in the 200s. What are my odds of getting an approval on this without having to recon? Obviously patience is not one of my strong points. I am hesitant to call because I don't want to be seen as desperately seeking credit (I'm not - I just want credit from them instead of some others).
Hi K,
I also recieved the review message. I had another question so i called and while speaking to the CSR she let me know they have an unusually large queu at the moment.
Regarding the TU pull, i apped for the cash rewards card today and also recieved a TU pull. Unfortunate, as my EQ is a bit better and has a few less inquiries.
Good luck with your approval ![]()

Good luck K, id be shocked if you dont get super high cl with a 200k income. Youve probably noticed ive been checking this out recently because i truely believe the income factor plays a huge factor in Navy doling out cli. You dont have billions in assets giving out all that dough to average joes like me without looking for the profitable clients. I hope im wrong. But not for you, i truelyl hope you get what you are looking for
My instinct tells me the same. I have been reading posts around here for a month or so and i always think to myself, "these data points are great, but what about your income?". I would never ask someone about their income, but obviously, if you are lender that will play a large role in what they are willing to risk.

Thanks for the response! I actually just got off the phone with a CSR too under the guise of another question. Since I just wanted to make sure that I did everything correctly while on the phone she called lending. They have everything they need but income verification takes 24-48 hours usually so hopefully I will find out tomorrow or Monday since I submitted yesterday. Bonus points for actually welcoming me as a new member. Apparently February 6th was when they began accepting veterans. After hearing all about the EQ pulls I was hopeful since I also have a slightly better EQ, but TU it is. Best of luck with yours. Looking forward to reading about it in approvals!
Yeah, i didn't really have a question either, i was really interested in the status.
Thank you for your service K. I am amazed it took this long for them to open the doors to all veterans.
