Chase CLD when CLI requested…..

I have two Chase cards for the last 7-8 years, and I never requested CLI on them nor I was automatically offered. For the last 2-3 weeks I have seen too many people having received CLI as SP from Chase...and many of those people were way over 5/24 and with a little spend...which made me to try for myself too. So, 4-5 days ago I requested CLI on my Freedom Unlimited card wherein I have CL of $25k but the first representative I spoke with was not friendly, instead provided me many info incorrect. So, I corrected her before hanging up the call with her, which she didn't like that I corrected her, to which she referred that I lectured her.

Then I called back right away and spoke with another representative who seemed nice and knowledgeable. I submitted my request for CLI with him but I was denied instantly by the system. I was told that I would receive the letter which I still have not received...not thru mail nor on my online account. However, an hour ago I received an online notice which states that since I am not using this card enough then Chase has decided to decrease my CL from $25k to $2k after 45 days later...and if I would like to prevent them from decreasing my CL then I should give them a call.

I admit that I have not been using this card enough for the last 4 years...I have been using like $10-$20 in every 4-5 months...So, I completely understand their such action, however, timing is very questionable. I am sure a few of you might not agree with me but I strongly believe that the first rep has something to do with it; otherwise why I didnt get the same letter for my other card-Sapphire wherein I have CL of $39k and I haven't used that one as well for many years except a few bucks here and there in every 4-5 months, unless the letter for that account is on its way as well....I have never seen anybody gets CLD upon asking CLI...Lesson learned that we should be very polite and nice with these folks; otherwise they could mess you up a big time.

Moving forward, I am very much upset now and would like to get my original CL back...Do you guys know what I should do within a few days in order to prevent them from decreasing my CL? I think a year back or so I read someone receiving the similar letter from Capital one but I didnt follow up with that thread....I would appreciate if you guys provide me some insight on my options especially when time is the essence. Thank you.

Re: Chase CLD when CLI requested…..

@Janneman  Really sorry to hear how this this situation turned out for you. I wonder if you inadvertently brought attention to your lack of heavy account usage with that initial phone call( which you think may be the case). And the CSR decided to "proactively" initiate some action. Or conversely, if after making the request, the algorithm determined that you have quite low spend and that automatically triggered it. Not sure as I'm not an expert but just hypothesizing here.

I think in your case, the best thing to do would be to call Chase and politely ask to have your limit reinstated. I do believe I've read where some members were able to call within the time frame mentioned in the AA letter and get their original limits reinstated. I'm not certain if you'll need to make a strong case for the limit to be reinstated but I suspect something along the lines of "you plan to put some more spend on the card in the near future and value your overall relationship with Chase(7-8 years of loyalty)" may go very far. I'd also try to get a supervisor on the line if the first CSR is unable or unwilling to grant the request. Regardless, I'd probably call them relatively soon although I can imagine you may be hesitant to call right away since you've just experienced this. Regardless, a call sooner than later may be in your best interest. I'd be careful to send a secure message bc of time lags and the lack of ability to make your case in real time.

I hope that you can get this resolved soon.

First off, I can understand anyone being upset. This is a bummer as that is a significant decrease, and my condolences this has happened to you. As for the CSR you roiled having anything to do with it personally, I'd be very skeptical. However, it could have been set off by them with the CLI request by triggering an account usage review/analysis where it determined the low usage simply doesn't justify the large CL anymore.

I would start by calling them at your earliest convenience, and as already suggested, politely request, while conveying in a jovial way what a dummy (not that you're a dummy but you know what I mean) you are for simply not thinking to make better use of the card, that they revoke the CLD as you plan to make a more conscience effort, or going to make better use of the card, also pointing out your long, and excellent history with them. If you can't gain any traction with the first level of CSR, politely ask to speak to a supervisor. I've always found that being polite and somewhat trying to have a nice conversation with people, even when they're telling me things I don't want to hear has gotten good results in the end. Wish you nothing but the best.

The other thing I would do is increase the usage of the card. Make it your daily driver for periods of time.

Re: Chase CLD when CLI requested…..

Follow the instructions in the letter to maintain your $25K CL.

As you learned, there's no benefit in being anything but polite with the CSRs -- even when they're wrong. Problems are rarely successfully resolved when you are confrontational with a person you're asking to help you or provide a service. You can, however, gain an ally, and unsolicited practical tips -- when you "kill them with kindness" -- or at least politeness. Smiley Happy

Best wishes.

Re: Chase CLD when CLI requested…..

Evidently the first representative was much more knowledgeable then you thought! She somehow managed to flag your account that would trigger CLD.

However these big banks have procedures in place for errors, so just call back and confirm that you are planning to use this account and having new purchases coming up and would like to restore your previous credit limit.

Just play dumb as you have no idea why CLD happened and try to keep the conversation brief.

Good luck!

Re: Chase CLD when CLI requested…..

@Janneman - I'm not sure if your call triggered that letter but it's not just you. Several of us received it as well (myself included).

See this thread HERE

Just call and say you're responding to the notice, and would like to keep your current limit.

Good luck!

@Janneman  See Post 43 of 43. Call number on top of letter or call the number on the back of the card.

Re: Chase CLD when CLI requested…..

@Janneman

I am so sorry that you are experiencing this.  This is terrible indeed.  I am being extra careful these days myself, as I too have a CSP with 24.5K limit which I am starting to feel as though Chase might start questioning my level of spend.

It could have been me that posted about CLD with Capital1.  I started with a 15K Venture, then after a couple of years or so, switched to QS.  I was mostly putting my spend on my AMEX EDP card at the time, and neglected the QS for a while.  That resulted in a letter from Cap1 notifying me that they were CLDing my QS down to 5K.  That was not fun, and I posted a thread about that.

Like others have said, the best thing seems to be to call and ask nicely.  I sincerely hope you get your original CL restored.

Right now, I am not contacting Chase for anything, out of fear that I may draw unneeded attention.  I am happy with the CL on the CSP anyway.
