Denied Discover Secured Card

Hi. My credit file is new and thin: 703 TU and 698 on EQ (fakos from Credit Karma) and nothing yet on Experian. Just one card (a Visa), that's two months old, but it has a generous $5k limit.

Earler today, I went through Discover's "See if You're Pre-approved" and got a message saying I was pre-approved for the Discover It Secured Card. Terrific, I thought! Easy way to add to my credit file, no fees so I'll give them the $200.

I applied: passed the credit check, then gave them my bank account info, then they asked for ID verification (the two documents). I had a bank statement, so I uploaded that, but not the SSN card. Figured I'd upload that later.

Anyway, not even 30 minutes later I get a call from them. It went to voice mail, but I called right back. Spoke to a nice enough guy and he asked some security questions. Wanted to verify my address and the issuer of another card I had on my credit file. That went well. Then he put me on hold to finish processing my application... Five minutes later, he was back on the line and said he still needed to finish processing the app, and asked me to continue to hold. Another few minutes later, he comes back saying they have all the information they need and that I would hear back from them in 7 to 10 days.

Alright. So then I go online to "Check Application Status". Lo, I get an error: "We're Sorry The page you are looking for is not available right now. We apologize for the inconvenience."

Thought that was strange, so I did a live chat with an agent. Told him about the message and after he verified me, he said that he wasn't able to approve my application and that I would get the reason in a letter in 7 to 10 days.

I wonder: What went wrong?

I'm depressed now. What went wrong?

I'm afraid you will have to wait for the Notice of Adverse Action letter to know exactly why you were declined.  While we can speculate we are not in possession of all the facts.

Did Discover specifically ask for a copy of your Social Security card?  What two identification documents did Discover ask you to provide?  Its unclear from your comment whether you actually provided them.

Online, yes, but when I spoke to them, they didn't even ask for my SSN, let alone a copy of the card.

Please feel free to speculate! I'm so curious how a secured card could be denied. Smiley Sad

Address verification and SSN card verification. I uploaded my bank statement with my address. My SSN card is at home so I figured I'd do that later.

Then, though, the agent called me to verify I applied. He never asked for any documents. I don't think he even looked at my bank statement, because he didn't say anything about it.

It could be that the absence of the social security card caused the denial.  Like I said earlier you'll have to wait for the letter to get the specific reasons.  CSRs wouldn't normally initiate a discussion about a denial on the phone.

Re: Depressed: Denied Discover Secured Card

I think you were denied because of not providing the ssn card copy. You were probably denied due to the ID verification not checking out (it happens on such thin files).
Next time, be patient and upload everything together at a later point. Something similar happened to me with Amex a while back.

It's a shame that the agent didn't just ask me for it.  It's odd though. This person did the same thing I did:

https://ficoforums.myfico.com/t5/Credit-Card-Approvals/Discover-IT-approval-had-to-jump-through-an-I...

i.e., they uploaded one document, but not SSN card, got a call from them, and then got approved.

Oh well, it's disappointing, but not much I can do now.

Re: Depressed: Denied Discover Secured Card

Did you receive a hard inquiry? If not I believe it may have just been a verification issue where as you can just apply again once you receive the letter.
